Question: Are you an official 501(3)(c) with the IRS?

At this time Bodhichitta is not an official 501(3)(c).  Bodhichitta is currently run as a sole proprietorhsip dedicated to contributing its profits to charity.  We have yet to turn a profit, yet have already donated $12,000 to the Central Asian Insitute at the beginning of 2009 to demonstrate our committment to our mission.

Question: Why do you use different bottle types and colors for the same wine, or a bordeux bottle for a burgundy?
Excellent question.  In an attempt to reduce our carbon footprint and re-use (which is even more earth-friendly than recycling), we not only cut our own production costs, but re-use of bottles saves loads of energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.  We either wash and de-label bottles we collect or buy from someone that does (Z Farms).  While all attempts are made to put the"right" wine in the "right" bottle, at times we simply make do with what we have.  At our last bottling, we used almost 80% re-used glass!
Question: How else does Bodhichitta operate in an environmental and sustainable manner?
At Bodhichitta we follow the product stewardship model of reduce, re-use and recycle process, in that order (see Mark's paper on this topic here). We minimize the amount of packaging we use while ensuring safe product delivery.  We re-use boxes and packaging material from various vendors and suppliers, so you might receive your shipment in a former "Amazon.com" or Brambleberry box.  We re-use bottles and encourage bottle re-use by offering a free bottle of white wine for every four cases of empty bottles that our consumers return to us. These measures not only save a small business like Bodhichitta money, but they also save energy (re-using items saves more energy than recycling) and keep materials from going to the landfill if they are not recycled.  We also volunteer with environmental organizations like the Nature Conservancy and Oregon Trout, doing everything from trail repair, office work to planting trees.
Question: What are the details of your used bottles for wine program?
We offer one bottle of white wine for four cases of empty bottles.  The bottles do not have to be from Bodhichitta.  Please call us in advance to see if we need bottles at that time and to arrange for drop-off.  To qualify, the bottles must be:

1) Rinsed after being emptied

2) Label soaked off and any residue removed

3) Foil capsule removed

Question: Are you a Buddhist?
While I don't belong to any one religion or consider myself a religious person, I do feel I am a spiritual person, taking from various walks of life, religions or philosophies to gain a greater awareness of the world, myself and others.  I feel connected to Buddhism, Taoism and Christianity, but would not label myself as any of them--perhaps all of them!  :)
Thank you for your questions!
